This private one day walk tour will take you to explore the 71-meter-high and 1,200-year-old Leshan Giant Buddha as well as the riverside ancient town of Huanglongxi which has a history of over 1,700 years. When in Leshan we will not only walk around the Giant Buddha and appreciate its beauty and grandeur, but also walk to explore the gardens and temples hidden in the mountains where many other Chinese tour groups don’t usually go. At Huanglongxi, you will feel about the laidback lifestyle in Chengdu’s countryside, and if you like, you may also sit down at a riverside teahouse and try a cup of tea, just do as the locals do.

What To Expect

Leshan Giant Buddha (Da Fo)

At 08:00am our guide and driver will pick you up from your Chengdu hotel. Then you will head for Leshan, and it takes about 2.5 hours t get there. During this 2.5 hour journey, you will see the beautiful countryside of Chengdu Plain with villages, tea plantations and fertile farmland. In some villages the local people also grow grapes and lotus.

Leshan Giant Buddha was carved from the cliff at the confluence of three rivers. By standing closer to him, you could feel the grandeur of this 71-meter-tall statue. From the year AD713 to 803, the ancient Chinese spent 90 years building this huge project hoping that it would protect them from the floods in the summer.

We will walk around the big statue and then walk from its head to its big feet to take a close look at it. After that, we will continue to explore the other parts of the mountain and visit the less-explored beautiful gardens and temples.

Huanglongxi Ancient Town

We will have lunch in a local restaurant and then drive about 1 hour and 45 minutes to Huanglongxi Ancient Town. With a history of more than 1,700 years, Huanglongxi Ancient Town is a good place to learn about the local people’s life on Chengdu Plain in the past, when the town was very prosperous along the ancient Silk Road, through which the silk and tea products from Chengdu Plain were transported to Myanmar, India, and Tibet.

There are still about 76 old houses in the town that were built inn Ming (AD1368-1644) and Qing (AD-1644-1911) Dynasties. The town itself has some authentic looking architecture, you can take a walk on the old streets to see the old houses, interesting souvenir shops, and some small temples. You may also wander along the river to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Then guide and driver will send you back to your hotel in Chengdu after your visit of Huanglongxi. It takes 45 minutes to one hour to drive back to your Chengdu hotel.
