What To Expect

Ancient City of Pingyao

Shuanglin Temple

After lunch at the local restaurant, you will begin exploring the Shuanglin Temple on the outskirts of the ancient city. The Shuanglin Temple is reputed to be the "museum of ancient painted sculptures". It houses more than 2,000 colorful sculptures reflecting the exquisite craftsmanship of artisans from the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. In 1997, UNESCO inscribed it on the World Heritage List as an important cultural site of the city of Ping Yao in 1997.

Zhenguo Temple

Zhenguo Temple is located 14 km north of Pingyao City in Shanxi Province. Built in 963, this temple is a marvel of ancient Chinese architecture that has survived through the centuries past. It stands out in particular for its construction of great technical prowess. Indeed the frameworks of this temple were assembled without any support, without any nails or glue, as can be observed in the room of the Ten Thousand Buddhas which constitutes the main construction of this temple. This room with its nickname "the treasure of a thousand years" intelligently combines technique and aesthetics with its grandiose and simple appearance. Its Xieshan style roof protects the room from climatic inconvenience.

Inside the Ten Thousand Buddhas, there is an elegant seated Buddha statue inside, with his two disciples, Anan and Jiaye, and other deities at his side. All these statues reveal the particularly refined style of sculptural art in the Tang Dynasty.
