What To Expect

Pingyao Confucian Temple
Throughout most of its history, Pingyao Confucian Temple was the home of the local school. With the abolition of the old Chinese examination system that had been set up during the final years of the reign (CE 1875-1908) of Emperor Guangxu during the Qing (CE 1644-1911) Dynasty, the old local school hierarchy was also abolished. Thus the local school at Pingyao Confucian Temple became the Industrial School of Pingyao County.

The Temple of the City God is situated in the southeast of the ancient city, covering an area of 7,302 square meters (around 8,733 square yards). It has a long history but has been well preserved. The structures of it embody the combined culture of Buddhism, Daoism and folk culture. The wonderful woodcarvings and mural paintings inside the temple reflect the excellent craftsmanship.

Ming and Qing Dynasties Street
Situated on South Avenue of the Pingyao Ancient City, the Ancient Ming-Qing Street was the noisiest centre of business at that time. The street is not very wide, with various kinds of shops orderly arranged along the road. These shops were all built with bricks and stones completely in the style of Ming and Qing architecture, which are all the prototypes of the aged buildings and quite different from the imitation works now. In the granite thresholds of each decent house, two lines of deep trails left by the running-over carriages can still be found, which provides evidence of the former bustle of business and also the pride held for them in the old days.
