What To Expect

For this day hike to Hefangkou Great Wall your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby at 8:00 am and take you via private transportation to HefangKou. The drive will take approximately 1.5 hours to reach the trailhead. After a 10-minute trail hike, you will reach and ascend The Great Wall of China. This section of the wall was restored a few years ago but is notably different than other sections because here you will find that the battlement wall is only on the northern face. This north-facing barrier was used to protect the soldiers in their elevated position from where they were able to defeat enemies attempting to breach the border wall. During the climb to the peak, you will experience many differently shaped watchtowers and see where the soldiers lived and worked. In some of the towers and along the battlement you can find arrow slits from which arrows were launched at the approaching enemy. Walking on the wall, it is easy to imagine life in centuries past and how strenuous it must have been for the soldiers in the towers and their families that usually lived in the village below. The winters in Hefangkou are infamously harsh and the summers are hot. This mountainous region is known for its steep drop-offs and jagged cliffs. This terrain forces the wall to ascend quickly but for hikers, there is plenty of time to rest, reflect, and enjoy the views. When we reach the pinnacle you will be welcomed with magnificent views that include a view of miles and miles of the rolling Great Wall of China. Here we will rest and have a snack before descending.
