What To Expect

Wolong Giant Panda Nature Reserve
Notes: the Panda Holding Program was suspended recently. The panda volunteer program is still available.

In the early morning (6:40am), your tour guide & driver will pick you up from your hotel in Chengdu and then drive about 2 hours to the Wolong Panda Base.

Upon arrival to the panda base, you will get a uniform, gloves, and a volunteer’s card with the assistance of your guide. Your guide will introduce you to the professional panda keepers. The panda keepers can speak simple English but your guide will be there for you at all times, helping to translate and taking memorable photos of you with the lovable pandas.

Your volunteering program itinerary:

9:00am–10:00am Clean the panda enclosures

Panda keepers need to supply fresh bamboo to these national treasures three times each day. The pandas usually eat only 30% of the bamboo, wasting 70% of it. You will need to sweep out the leftovers, replace it with fresh bamboo, and clean out the feces.

10:00am–11:00am Take a break and tour around the panda base

Have a relaxing walk in the well-paved base and listen to the legendary stories of these pandas. You will also have a chance to meet four naughty red pandas.

11:00am–11:30am Feed a panda

Pandas are supplied with panda cakes, apples, and carrots four times a day. The panda keepers will show you how to feed a panda with your own hands at close proximity.

11:30am–1:00pm Have lunch and a rest in the base

1:00pm–2:00pm Watch a panda movie that lasts for about 40 minutes

You will see a special documentary about how the shy pandas mate, give birth, grow up, and are returned to the wild.

2:00pm–3:30pm More cleaning and feeding, and making panda’s cakes

The bamboo you supplied in the morning will have become dry by the afternoon. Remove it and replace it with fresh bamboo. Then feed the pandas with some more panda cakes and apples. Having fed the pandas with panda cakes, aren’t you curious as to how they are made? It is time to make some panda cakes with your own hands. The ingredients will be prepared in advance. Get creative about the shapes of the cakes.

3:30pm–4:00pm Get a certificate, and drive back to Chengdu

The volunteer work ends here and you will receive a certificate for this unforgettable day. Say goodbye to the pandas you take care of.

Your guide and driver will escort you back to your hotel in Chengdu.

Experience of a lifetime !

We did this last year..and it was just wonderful! We were set to work clearing out our panda' s enclosure..and later in the day fed him. Amazing. Your guide takes all the photos at this time as you are not allowed to. His poo had to be collected by us and put in a special basket to be weighed..part of his health check. We had lots of time in the afternoon to walk around the centre and take lots of photos and see the antics of baby pandas in their "nursery" enclosure where they have an "adventure park " and play equipment ..like children. Do do this if you can ! Incredible creatures. They just don't look real!
Once in a Lifetime

Do not miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to interact with Panda bears! They are incredible, beautiful, gentle, animals (but wild animals). As a volunteer you will clean out their enclosures which I wasn't looking forward to having spent much time as a child on a farm. However, they pretty much only eat bamboo and the remnants are what comes out; not distasteful to clean up at all! We also "cracked" their bamboo for feeding, learned to make a special dietary "cake" they feed them, fed them "treats" two different times, and for a pretty hefty fee you can have 20 seconds of photo opportunity with a young Panda. The fee seems like a lot and it is but remember that you will NEVER likely have this opportunity again in your lifetime unless you live in China. There is also an informative movie about the Pandas and you will have lunch with the facility staff. You also have ample time to observe the Pandas in their enclosures. We particularly enjoyed watching a set of twins playing together; precious! I highly recommend this if you have the time (whole day) and money to do it. The drive from Chengdu is a couple of hours but beautiful scenery of the mountains along the way.
Volunteering at Wolong Panda Base...

Volunteering at Wolong Panda Base was a memorable and amazing experience.

The day was very organised and involved various panda activities highlights include feeding a panda up close and holding a panda you have to make an additional payment but it is absolutely worth it!

Our English-speaking guide, Summer, was excellent. She was very friendly, told us a lot about Chengdu and answered our questions. At the panda base she was with us at all times, helping with translation and taking photos for us Thank you Summer!

I highly recommend visiting this wonderful nature reserve if you love pandas or think they are cute you will never forget this experience!
