What To Expect

The Great wall of Jiankou
We will stop at village (bottom of Jiankou Great Wall ) The village we call it “XiZhaZi.” You have to climb 40-50 minutes mountain , then you couldreach on Jiankou Great Wall . Driver will show you where should start to climb the mountain. Will show you the path. The Jiankou section is known for its ruggedness and wild beauty, and you will be in awe of the marvelous views it affords. When you reach on Jiankou Great Wall , you will see a deserted watchtower that gives you a panoramic view of the entire valley. In the early morning the view is priceless with its morning fog. This section of the wall is not well known by tourists. So you may alone on the wall in the early morning.

You will start your hiking from “Zhengbeilou” where is best location for taking pictures. Another highlight of Jiankou is the enemy observation tower known as, ‘eagle flies facing upward’( "Ying Fei Dao Yang"), so named because this watchtower was erected on the highest peak in the area, and eagles and hawks often perch on it. So don’t hike to that direction. It is too dangerous for hiking.

Tea on the roof

This experience on the great wall at Mutianyu, was unbelievable and the main reason it's because of my driver Ma.

First about the service, he picked me on time down my hotel, we had a smooth drive to destination, then Ma lead me during the climbing with few stops to take some pictures on some spots he knows, Ma brought me on the roof of one of the sentinel, we brought some treats and a very good home tea and finish with fun pictures , with no one around us and a wonderful weather.

He explained me all the indication for the next meeting point. Then after few mistakes of my part Ma was very helpful in case I couldn't call him, he charged my phone with some credits, I missed a point he came by himself pick me up the station to came down with him .

We left the morning at 6.30 am finished the wall at 1.30pm and back at 3.40pm . He took a really care of me.

I highly recommend them, thanks to Leo and thank you very much Ma.
Made for a truly incredible, once-in-a-lifetime trip!

Officially, we had to scrap the trip to Jiankou due to weather, however, the driver took us to Mutianyu and gave us really good directions for how to still get on the wild section of the wall instead. Our driver was on time (actually, a few minutes early) and was fun to chat with about life in Beijing. He got us to the wall, and since it was snowing, we virtually had the place to ourselves. I highly recommend this service.
Pleased with Leo's Tour Service

We visited the Beijing area in April 2018 and used Leo's tours to do the Jiankou to Mutianyu hike. The hike itself is a great way to experience the Great wall - first on the unrestored areas, and then on the restored sections closer to Mutianyu. The hike starts in a small village area on a simple wooded trail. This is a decent ascent - perhaps 800 ft or so as we estimated - to reach the Great Wall section near Jiankou. When you reach the wall, we used a bit of a broken down section with some stacked up stones to actually get on top of the wall section. This "access point" is only about chest high on an average person but the stepping stones are a bit shaky. Once on the wall, your biggest hiking challenges are now behind you. You'll encounter various "trail" conditions on the wall and through the towers - sometimes stepping over the "rubble" along the wall top sometimes stepping through some light bushes, and sometimes walking a bit close to the edge of the wall when the wall's a bit high - all of which which we found very enjoyable. We wanted to see what the unrestored sections are like, and this was a great way to do so. You'll generally be descending as you head toward Mutianyu and the restored areas.

As for Leo's services, we were most pleased. We used a driver only rather than a guide. Our driver James was a very pleasant and helpful person. The day we hiked was a bit rainy, making it questionable whether the trail through the woods to the Jiankou section would be reachable. The team at Leo's was very patient and helpful, offering lots of advice as we made choices. Ultimately we chose to hike up the wooded trail to Jiankou, and our driver accompanied us on the trail most of the way up until he was sure that the conditions were acceptable on the trail. Leo's staff also checked with us off an on during the hike. We made easy arrangements to meet the driver at the end of our hike. The staff from Leo's was knowledgeable, easy to reach and very prompt and reliable in their responses. We really enjoyed meeting James and were very impressed with his kindness and personable nature.
Great Driver and Great trip

This was a great service. Our driver Jason was great. Showed up on time and spoke good english. He showed us where to go and told us where to meet him for pick up. We even accidentally left a hat in his car when he dropped us off and he drove back to return it. Thanks Jason! It was a great hassle free day.
A good service and a well informed driver

Our family traveled with Leo's. We are two adults and two children under the age of 13. We received very good service from Leo's. Our driver was fluent in English and understood our questions and comments very well. He scheduled a time to leave that was appropriate and avoided traffic. He also informed us of other things to do while in Beijing. The car ride was comfortable.

I think the only negative was our daughter (10 years old) was dressed like it was a hot summer day and it was actually chilly on the wall, so she was cold for the walk on the wall. Our driver could have warned us about that when he picked us up.

All in all though a very good tour.
