Peking Opera has a history of only about 200 years. It is a form of Chinese opera which combines music, vocal performance, mime, dance, and acrobatics.Basically, Peking Opera never has been an exclusive art form, from the beginning it was enjoyed both by the imperial court and the common people, so a wide range of audiences from all social classes was generated. Initially, exclusively male performers were allowed to participate in a play. Only from the 1870ies on, women made appearances on the stage. Even though, male performers continued to be highly popular in Dan roles.

In recent years, Peking opera has attempted numerous reforms in response to sagging audience numbers. These reforms, which include improving performance quality, adapting new performance elements, and performing new and original plays, have met with mixed success.

Liyuan Theatre is the most prestigious performance venue of Beijing Opera. From the traditional performance stage, the Baixian Table (old fashioned square table to seat eight people) to the unique facial make-up, everything in the theater reflects the special feature of old Beijing.

Authentic Peking Opera Musical Performance
Wendell_K, 05-10-2018
Our driver was exactly on time for pick-up at our hotel. There were no other passenger pick-ups and we were able to get to the theater early for the actor make-up/dress-up. The driver got our seats and asked the attendants for good seats. To our surprise, we sat in the front, center table where we could see all the action close up like a personal performance. The musicians were excellent and the Chinese Opera was as my Chinese grandmother had seen in her younger days. Chinese snacks were provided and English translation was shown on the screens to the left and right of the stage. Our driver had waited in the parking lot and was there for us after the performance. He gave us a driving tour through Peking at night on the way to our hotel. Excellent transportation service, best seats in the house, moving Peking Opera....it was a definite highlight of our one-in-a-lifetime trip to China. Thank you!!
